i am antigone

Defiant, real, funny, an unapologetic defender of truth.

Written by Saudamini Siegrist

Starring Nicole Ansari, I Am Antigone, a revisioning of the original “Antigone,” figures as testimony of the individual citizen in opposition to the authoritative state. Antigone sets out to defy Creon’s command by performing the burial rites for her beloved brother, Polynices. Her determination to carry out the burial, outlawed by the State, turns her political confrontation into a personal showdown. The voice of dissent – “I am Antigone” – turns into a crisis of every individual who dares to take a stand against tyrannical power. I Am Antigone denounces the abuse of power, testifying to the ability of the individual to oppose injustice and tyranny.

“He wanted to cut a figure, wanted to leave a footprint, posing for the camera like a poster boy. He got what he wanted, all right. He’s well remembered for his historical blunder.” –Antigone, I Am Antigone

Playwright and poet Saudamini Siegrist’s powerful new adaptation, as part of the Dream Up Festival at Theater for the New City, is clearly inspired by the history of the feminist and anti-war movements, plus the very present politics of our own time and place. From the underground tomb where her uncle Creon, the king, believes her to have been buried alive, and across more than two millennia of human history, Antigone (played skillfully by Nicole Ansari) narrates her tale; a tale previously told almost exclusively by men. Director Myriam Cyr does a fine job.
